According to Dictionary.com’s
Unabridged Dictionary Tattoo
means,
“the art or practice of
marking the skin with
indelible patterns, pictures,
legends, etc., by making
punctures in it and inserting
pigments.”
It is likely the word came
from the Samoan or Tihitian
word, “Tatau”. Joseph Banks,
a naturalist aboard one of
Captain Cook’s adventures,
made a number of journal
entries about the Line Art of
certain Samoans they
encountered who had marked
their faces with complex
patterns (I wonder if they had
visited the Island of Waponi
Woo?) thus started the
migration of the Body Art or
Line Art form called Tattooing
to the European countries.
Tattooing became a traditional
art form for many sailors of
all nationalities including
the United States especially
during World War II.
